Mushroom Walk

Sunday, August 13, 2023

Join mushroom enthusiast Susan Hopkins to discover what fabulous fungi are growing in our woods. The forested trail to Minnow Pond is home to dozens of mushrooms that offer a rich introduction and exploration of the “wood wide web.” Which mushrooms may be fruiting changes constantly, and Susan will share her knowledge of what’s “on view.” Discover which mushrooms to forage for a delicious dinner or delightful dye and which to avoid for you and your pets’ well-being.

A few notes for getting ready:

·         The walk will take place on Minnow Pond Trail. The trail is a ¾-mile, easy to moderate trail and may have varied conditions. Depending on the abundance of mushrooms, the group may not hike entire trail.

·         Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water, snack, bug spray, and appropriate outerwear.

·         Bring a notebook and pencil if you'd like to take notes and/or your camera to take pictures.

·         The mushroom walk is rain or shine. In case of thunderstorms or severe weather, we will cancel the program and will contact you as soon as possible.

·         Dogs, except service dogs, are not allowed on the museum campus or trails.

Pre-registration required.

Susan Hopkins has learned to identify fungi through her 40-year membership in the New Jersey Mycological Association. She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures, walks, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.
